A new cladding finish can change how a home looks from the street, but its real job starts when Melbourne rain hits the wall. This external cladding installation guide explains what needs to happen behind and around the boards or panels, not just on the visible face. Done properly, cladding can refresh a tired façade, improve weather protection and add lasting value. Done poorly, it can hide moisture problems until they become far more expensive to fix.

Start with the wall, not the cladding

Before choosing a profile, colour or material, the existing wall needs a proper inspection. A sound cladding project begins by checking the condition of the framing, wall linings, brickwork or sheeting underneath. Any signs of rot, termite damage, cracking, water staining, loose fixings or failed flashings should be dealt with first.

It can suit period homes, modern extensions and outdoor areas, but it needs careful selection and finishing. Timber moves with changes in moisture and temperature, so spacing, fixing methods and coating systems need to allow for that movement. It also needs ongoing maintenance if the finish is to stay looking sharp.

Metal cladding can work well on contemporary additions and feature walls. It is lightweight and durable, although detailing around corners, openings and cut edges must be neat and weather-tight. Composite panels and other proprietary systems may also be suitable, but they should always be installed to the manufacturer’s specifications and checked for their suitability on the particular building.

The cheapest product is not always the most economical choice. A lower upfront cost can be lost quickly if a material needs frequent repainting, is poorly suited to a highly exposed wall or does not tie in well with the rest of the home. The goal is a finish that looks right and holds up under local conditions.

Preparation is where much of the value sits. Once cladding covers the wall, the important work behind it is no longer visible. That is why experienced installation is less about simply fixing boards in place and more about managing water, ventilation, alignment and transitions.

The existing surface is prepared by removing damaged materials, making repairs and establishing a level fixing plane where required. On some projects, battens are installed to create a cavity behind the cladding. This cavity helps manage incidental moisture and allows the wall assembly to dry where the selected system requires it. The exact arrangement depends on the cladding product, the wall construction and relevant building requirements.

A suitable wall wrap or vapour-permeable membrane may be installed before battens and cladding. Its job is to provide another line of defence against wind-driven rain while allowing the wall to manage moisture appropriately. It needs to be lapped, taped and integrated carefully around openings. A membrane with rushed joins or punctures is not doing its job properly.

Set-out comes next. Boards, sheets and panels need to be measured from a consistent reference point so lines remain straight across the façade. This sounds basic, but uneven set-out becomes obvious around windows, eaves and corners. Good carpentry shows in consistent shadow lines, tidy joints and cladding that sits flat without forced or overdriven fixings.

Flashings and junctions are where failures happen

Most cladding problems begin at the edges: above a window, where a roof meets a wall, at a corner, or where a new extension joins an existing structure. These areas need purpose-made flashings and careful sequencing so water is directed outwards, rather than behind the cladding.

Windows and doors need properly detailed head flashings, sill treatment and trims suited to the chosen system. At roof lines, apron flashings and clearances need to keep water moving away from the wall. Bottom edges also need attention. Cladding should not be run carelessly down into soil, paving or garden mulch, where it can wick moisture, be damaged by splashback or become difficult to inspect.

Penetrations for taps, lights, exhaust vents and air-conditioning units deserve the same care. They should be flashed, sealed and fixed in a way that does not create an easy path for water into the wall. A neat bead of sealant alone is rarely a long-term answer. Sealant supports proper detailing, but it does not replace it.

Installation should follow the product requirements

Every cladding system has its own fixing requirements, including fastener type, spacing, edge distances, expansion gaps and joint treatment. These are not optional details. They account for the way a material expands, contracts, drains and performs through changing weather.

For board cladding, the installer works methodically from the base or starting line, checking level regularly and maintaining the correct overlap or joint arrangement. For sheet and panel systems, accurate framing or batten spacing is essential so each panel is fully supported and fixed where intended. Cutting should be clean, with exposed edges treated where the product calls for it.

Painted systems need the right preparation and coating process. This may involve priming cut edges, applying compatible undercoats and allowing adequate drying time between coats. Rushing paintwork can leave a finish looking uneven or reduce its service life, particularly on elevations exposed to strong sun and rain.

The work should also account for practical items that affect the finished home: downpipes, external lights, hose taps, meter boxes, security screens and landscaping. Planning these details early prevents last-minute cuts and awkward additions that spoil an otherwise clean result.

Permits, compliance and working around an occupied home

Depending on the scope of work, cladding replacement or façade alteration may need to meet building regulations, planning controls, fire requirements or owners corporation rules. This can be relevant for heritage areas, attached homes, boundary walls and larger renovation projects. The right pathway depends on the property and the extent of the changes, so it is worth confirming before materials are ordered.

Good work involves protecting nearby windows and garden areas, managing dust and offcuts, keeping access points as clear as possible and removing rubbish progressively. A quote should make it clear what is included, rather than leaving key items to assumption. Materials, preparation work, wall wrap or battens where needed, flashings, trims, fixings, painting or finishing, site protection and rubbish removal should all be addressed. It should also identify exclusions, such as unforeseen structural repairs, electrical relocation or upgrades uncovered after existing cladding is removed.
